6 ways to reduce the impact of the swimming pool on the environment by using high technology

Swimming is a great sport and pools add to the pleasant experience of swimmers. But in their nature they are not exactly ecological. Using the right equipment can reduce your environmental footprint and save money.  Modern technologies and innovations in the production of pool equipment now allow more and more pool elements to be automated. This makes it possible to reduce the maintenance time, and management can be done with just one push of a button on the smartphone, tablet or computer. Before choosing the equipment for the pool, it is important to research the supplier and whether it invests in environmentally friendly technologies and is socially responsible in its activity towards customers, employees and all stakeholders. It is also important to be aware of the return on the investment we are making in purchasing the pool equipment by considering not only the price we pay for its initial purchase but also the cost of maintenance and operation.

That is why the introduction of the new technologies listed below can contribute to reducing the consumption of electricity and water and make your swimming facility more environmentally friendly and at the same time healthy:

  • Automated water quality management systems. They use sensors and an app to monitor and adjust water quality parameters in real time. They automatically dose the required amount of chemicals and maintain the balance between pH and alkalinity of the water. This way, they optimize water purification and reduce the consumption of chemicals. Apart from having a negative effect on the environment, the cost of chemicals acquisition increases over time. The use of hydrolysis, electrolysis and UV systems ensures perfectly clean and healthy water with a very low salt concentration. They provide control and monitoring at any time through remote access.
  • Variable speed filter pumps entering the pool market. Unlike traditional pumps that always run at the same speed, variable speed pumps run at a reduced speed for longer and consume less energy. This way they save up to 85% electricity, and the investment in the pump pays for itself in about 3 seasons. That means the equivalent electrical power is more efficient and has a greater flow rate than classic pumps. And if it is combined with a cartridge filter, the best effect is achieved. Moreover, this reduces the pool’s carbon footprint.
  • Pool cover — it reduces the amount of leaves and dirt that fall into the pool. This way, the water remains cleaner for a longer time and the need to use disinfection products is reduced. Another key advantage is reducing heat loss from the water, especially at night. A pool cover is probably the first environmental step to take in order to reduce heating energy consumption, water loss from evaporation and chemicals, thereby reducing operating costs.
  • Heat pump with full inverter technology. Thanks to this technology, the heat pump adapts to the external weather conditions in real time and maintains the desired water temperature at minimal costs. This results in savings on electricity bills and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by up to 60%. It is extremely quiet and the balance between thermal comfort and energy saving is precisely set.
  • Use of cartridge filters. Most of the pools are equipped with sand filters. Although they are relatively efficient and cost-effective at the time of purchase, they are not the most environmentally friendly option. The best choice from an environmental point of view is the cartridge filter. It has twice the finer filtration than sand filters, no backwashing is required every 15 days. A spray of water once or twice a year is sufficient. As a result, up to 6,000 litres of water are saved every year, and no chemicals are released into the environment. In addition, these filters are very easy to install, take up a much smaller footprint and require very little maintenance.
  • Energy saving with LED technology. The lighting of the pool contributes to its aesthetics, and the intelligent LED lights are very economical and save up to 90% of electricity.
